Visiting DC

I took this weekend off from writing to tour Washington D.C. with my family. It was my 35 birthday, (ugh) and my wonderful fiancee took me and the kids to see the Smithsonian Museums. I really enjoyed it. My children especially loved the Air and Space Museum and I truly valued the Native American Museum. I am Cherokee and so it really meant a lot to me to get to show my children parts of their heritage that they are unfamiliar with. I even saw a picture of one of my great ancestors. I did get a bit emotional though. It has been so many years since I was on the reservation or with my family, that I had forgotten much of my own culture. Reading the stories and viewing the items on display, was like a rush of memories. It is amazing how much came back from my childhood. It was an honor to get to share it with my kids and with my fiancee, who although he is Caucasian, he is very respectful of my cultural background as well.
